3478 – European Art: Chinese Influences

Discover the ways that Chinese porcelains, silks, lacquers and paintings stimulated Western art from the 16th to 18th centuries. Europeans were fascinated with “exotic” Eastern objects d’art. We’ll study examples of Western art that demonstrate changes in European style and taste. And we’ll see how Chinese blue and white ceramics influenced the development of Western ceramics. Our lively discussions will touch on the importance of the Dutch East India Company; the Jesuit missionaries; the Ming dynasty Chinese maritime explorer Zheng He; and the transmission of Chinese art along the Silk Road.

  • Examine the ways Chinese porcelain influenced the development of European ceramics.
  • Learn in detail about works of Western art in a variety of media, from paintings to porcelains, which demonstrate these changes in artistic production and the influence of Chinese art on Western tastes, materials and techniques.
